Turkey in 10 Days: Istanbul, Cappadocia & the Coast

Turkey straddles Europe and Asia in every sense — east and west, ancient and modern, beach and mountain. Ten days lets you pair its incomparable city with the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia and a stretch of the Mediterranean coast.

Days 1-4: Istanbul

Give the city real time. The Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque face each other across a park — see both early. The Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar (4,000 shops), and the Basilica Cistern underground are essentials. But the magic is in the neighborhoods: a ferry up the Bosphorus, tea in Balat's painted streets, fish sandwiches by the Galata Bridge, and a hammam to end a day.

Days 5-7: Cappadocia

Fly to central Anatolia for one of Earth's strangest landscapes — "fairy chimney" rock formations, cave churches, and underground cities carved by early Christians. The sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the valleys is genuinely once-in-a-lifetime (book ahead; weather-dependent). Stay in a cave hotel, hike the Rose and Red Valleys, and explore the underground city of Derinkuyu.

Days 8-10: The coast

Fly or drive to the southwest. Antalya's old town and nearby ancient cities (Termessos, Aspendos) blend history and beach. Or base in Kas or Fethiye for the famous turquoise coast — sea kayaking over sunken ruins at Kekova, paragliding over Oludeniz's blue lagoon.

Practical notes

• Visa: e-visa for many nationalities; check yours.
• Getting around: Domestic flights are cheap and frequent — use them to cover the distances.
• Best months: April-May and September-October for ideal weather and fewer crowds.
• Balloons: Book Cappadocia balloons before you arrive and build in a buffer day for weather.
