Peru Itinerary: Machu Picchu and Far Beyond (2026)

iliTrip · May 12, 2026

Everyone comes for Machu Picchu. The travelers who get it right also see the Sacred Valley, Cusco's living culture, the Amazon, and the surreal Rainbow Mountain.

Machu Picchu is the headline, but Peru's depth surprises everyone who goes. In ten days you can pair the famous citadel with the Sacred Valley, a culturally rich highland city, and a taste of the Amazon — a country of astonishing range.

Days 1-2: Cusco (acclimatize)

Fly into Cusco (3,400m) and slow down — altitude is real. Sip coca tea, wander the San Blas artisan quarter, and let the Inca-foundation-meets-colonial architecture sink in. Don't rush to Machu Picchu before your body adjusts.

Days 3-4: The Sacred Valley

Lower and gentler than Cusco, the valley eases acclimatization and is stunning in its own right. Pisac ruins and market, the terraces of Moray, the salt pans of Maras, and the fortress town of Ollantaytambo — the launch point for the train to Machu Picchu.

Day 5: Machu Picchu

Take the early train to Aguas Calientes and the first bus up. Go at opening for the classic mist-burning-off views before the crowds. Book a guide and, if you want the climb, a Huayna Picchu permit well in advance — they sell out.

Days 6-7: Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake

Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) is otherworldly — striped mineral ridges at 5,000m. It's a hard, high day hike; go acclimatized. Humantay Lake is a turquoise alternative, equally beautiful.

Days 8-10: Amazon or Lima

Fly to Puerto Maldonado for an accessible slice of the Amazon — lodges, river trips, monkeys and macaws. Or head to Lima to end on the food: it's one of the world's great culinary cities (book Central or Maido if you can).

Practical notes

  • Altitude: Acclimatize in the Sacred Valley before high hikes. Hydrate; consider altitude meds.
  • Booking: Machu Picchu tickets and Inca Trail permits sell out months ahead.
  • Best months: Dry season, May to September.
