Mexico City Travel Guide: The Coolest Capital in the Americas
iliTrip · May 8, 2026
World-class food, walkable neighborhoods, ancient pyramids on the doorstep, and a creative energy that's made it the travel obsession of the decade. How to do CDMX right.
Mexico City has quietly become one of the world's great travel destinations — a sprawling, sophisticated capital with extraordinary food, leafy walkable neighborhoods, deep history, and prices that still feel like a gift. Here's how to spend four perfect days.
Day 1: The historic center
Start at the Zócalo, one of the world's largest squares, flanked by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor — Aztec ruins unearthed in the heart of the modern city. The Palacio de Bellas Artes and Diego Rivera's murals are nearby. Eat at a historic cantina and feel the layers of the city stack up.
Day 2: Roma & Condesa
These adjacent neighborhoods are the city's beating creative heart — tree-lined streets, art deco buildings, specialty coffee, design shops, and some of the best restaurants on the continent. This is where to wander aimlessly, eat tacos al pastor at a street stand, and end with mezcal.
Day 3: Coyoacán & Xochimilco
Cobblestoned Coyoacán holds the Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul — book ahead). South of there, Xochimilco's canals offer colorful trajinera boat rides through the last remnants of the Aztec lake system — festive on weekends.
Day 4: Teotihuacan
An hour north, the colossal Pyramids of the Sun and Moon rise from the plain — one of the great archaeological sites anywhere. Go at opening; for something unforgettable, take a sunrise hot-air balloon over the pyramids.
The food, specifically
CDMX is a top-five food city, full stop. Street tacos, mole in Oaxacan kitchens, world-ranked fine dining (Pujol, Quintonil), markets like Mercado de San Juan, and churros at 2am. Come hungry; leave converted.
Practical notes
- Safety: Tourist neighborhoods (Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Centro) are walkable and lively; use Uber at night, stay aware as in any big city.
- Altitude: 2,240m — take day one easy.
- Best months: Year-round; the dry season (Nov-Apr) is most reliable.
