Jordan Itinerary: Petra, Wadi Rum & the Dead Sea

iliTrip · May 6, 2026

A rose-red city carved into cliffs, a Martian desert you can sleep in, and floating in the saltiest sea on Earth. Jordan packs wonder into a small, safe, welcoming country.

Jordan is one of travel's great surprises — compact, safe, deeply hospitable, and home to some of the most jaw-dropping sights on Earth. A week links its highlights with easy drives and time to linger.

Days 1-2: Amman & Jerash

Ease in via the capital. Amman's Citadel and Roman theatre anchor a day, and the city's food scene is excellent. An hour north, Jerash is one of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere — colonnaded streets, temples, and a hippodrome you can walk through nearly alone.

Days 3-4: Petra

Nothing prepares you for the walk through the Siq — a narrow, winding canyon that opens, suddenly, onto the Treasury carved into rose-red stone. But Petra is vast: give it two days. Hike up to the Monastery (800 steps, worth every one), explore the royal tombs, and consider Petra by Night when the Siq is lit by candlelight.

Days 5-6: Wadi Rum

The desert of Lawrence of Arabia — and the filming location for half of cinema's Mars. Sleep in a Bedouin camp under staggering stars, take a 4x4 across red sand between towering rock formations, and watch the sunset turn the whole valley to fire. One of the most atmospheric nights you'll ever have.

Day 7: The Dead Sea

End by floating — effortlessly — in the lowest, saltiest body of water on Earth, then coating yourself in its famous mineral mud. The perfect, surreal way to relax before flying home.

Practical notes

  • Jordan Pass: Buy it before arrival — it covers your visa and Petra entry and saves real money.
  • Getting around: Renting a car is easy and the best way to see the country; distances are short.
  • Best months: Spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov). Summer desert heat is intense.
