Egypt Travel Guide: Pyramids, the Nile & Beyond (2026)
iliTrip · May 14, 2026
Cairo's chaos, the Pyramids at dawn, a Nile cruise through 4,000 years of history, and the Red Sea to recover. The complete first-timer's guide to Egypt.
Few places deliver on their promise like Egypt. The Pyramids are exactly as staggering as you hope, the Nile is exactly as timeless, and the sheer depth of history — older than almost everything you think of as "ancient" — reorders your sense of time. Here's how to see it well on a first trip.
Days 1-3: Cairo and Giza
Cairo is loud, dense, and rewarding. The Pyramids of Giza sit right on the city's edge — go at opening to beat heat and crowds. The Grand Egyptian Museum finally houses the full Tutankhamun collection and is world-class. Lose an afternoon in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and eat koshari like a local.
Days 4-7: The Nile (Luxor to Aswan)
Fly south to Luxor, the world's greatest open-air museum. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple at sunset, and Hatshepsut's temple are non-negotiable. Then board a Nile cruise to Aswan — three or four days drifting past temples (Edfu, Kom Ombo), palm groves, and village life unchanged for millennia. It's the best way to experience the river that made Egypt.
Day 8: Abu Simbel
The colossal temples Ramses II carved into a cliff — and which engineers moved, block by block, to save from a rising lake. Worth the early start from Aswan.
Days 9-11: Red Sea
Recover where the desert meets turquoise water. Dahab for a laid-back, diver's vibe; Hurghada or Marsa Alam for resorts and world-class reefs. The snorkeling and diving here are among the best on Earth.
Practical notes
- Visa: e-visa or visa on arrival for most nationalities.
- Guides: A good Egyptologist guide transforms the sites from old stones into living history — worth it.
- Best months: October to April. Summer in Upper Egypt is brutally hot.
- Etiquette: Dress modestly at sites and outside resorts; carry small bills for tips (baksheesh).
